My sweet pup, Pepper, is everything to me. There's nothing I wouldn't do to improve the quality of her life, or to keep her tail wagging. She's a very special girl, but she has had a few challenges.

Throughout her younger years (she's five now), she struggled with constant digestive issues. Multiple expensive trips to the vets and several food experiments later, we had arrived at a food that seemed to work for her. It was a wet food - a beef stew.

However, at the start of 2020, I started to notice that she was developing some dandruff. So back to the vet I went, and we got a medicated shampoo and a regimen to follow (she hated it).

By March 2020 after following her skincare regimen for 3 months, the problem began to escalate. My beautiful girl started loosing hair - which was very alarming, being that she's a golden doodle and does not shed. It progressively got worse until she started losing chunks of her hair. I was terrified as to what it could be.

Pepper, March 2020

I took her back to the vet, again, and did not get a concrete answer. I was given supplements and told to try a new food. A kangaroo recipe - $5/can.

Feeling frustrated, I started researching her symptoms to figure out how to help her. I scoured the web looking for accounts from other pet parents for possible solutions.

I found that dogs that shared Pepper's symptoms were often diagnosed with food sensitivities. A solution that came up over and over was to try cooking fresh, homemade food.

And so I did.

I made her a few variations of beef and vegetables, lots of scrambled eggs, and some yummy peanut butter and pumpkin treats. Immediately, I saw how much Pepper loved her new diet. Within a few weeks I began to see a difference in her skin. After a month her hair was growing back.

It was great, for Pepper. It was just a huge time suck for me. To be completely candid, I'm the type of person who hardly even cooks for themselves, so the adjustment to cooking for my dog daily was tough on me.

A friend suggested I try a fresh food subscription service so that Pepper would have all the benefits of her new diet without the time commitment on my end.

I explored all my options and ultimately decided to try out The Farmer's Dog. What I liked about their service is the convenience of the pre-portioned meals, the fact that a veterinary nutritionist develops the meals, and that each recipe features simple, high-quality, human-grade ingredients.

We're over a year in with The Farmer's Dog now & we're obsessed.

Pepper is full of energy, her skin & hair look great, and she has no more digestive issues. In fact, for a little TMI, her poops are an A+. Oh and - one of my favorite benefits - her breath smells so much better! Now I can enjoy her sloppy kisses that much more.
